Got Alpha Gal ?

Alpha Gal Syndrome (AGS) is an allergy triggered by exposure to galactose-α-1,3-galactose, or alpha-gal, a sugar found in mammalian meat, dairy products, and mammalian-derived by-products like gelatin. People with AGS can experience hives, itching, swelling, wheezing, gastrointestinal ills such as stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, and other symptoms. Anaphylaxis, a life threatening response to the allergen, can occur.

Most cases in USA are linked to bites from lone star ticks.  Alpha-gal is found naturally in tick saliva and, when transferred to humans through a bite, can induce the production of alpha-gal–specific antibodies. 

People’s symptoms vary as does the severity and duration.  What people react to also varies, with some able to tolerate certain types of mammal meat or milk products, but not others. Some food additives and  medications can also be culprits.
